He shot her in the chest.

She didn’t remember anything after that. She remembered Katherine’s hand slipping from hers, and she remembered seeing the muzzle of the gun. There was a feeling like her body was being snapped in two right where her heart was, and then nothing. No fear, no pain, no shock. Just nothing.

And then she woke up.

They were in the basement of the Old Lockwood property. She recognized the rod iron gates before anything else, and she wasn’t sure how she got there, but she couldn’t worry about that now. She needed to get out. She needed to get home. Everything was spinning in her head, and her hands fumbled for the bars in front of her to pull herself to her feet. Her legs were shaky and everything was hazy, but it all seems to come to focus on the muzzle of the gun in front of her.

“Well, well, well—looks like we’re walking away with a big fish after all.”

She knew it was the hunter who shot her. Who tortured her, trying to find out where Klaus was before he killed her. This man was sick of hunting hybrids, and he knew that she was the key, they key to all of it. He was going to kill her, but he wanted to kill Klaus too, and he didn’t believe her when she said that she didn’t know where he was.

Then there was Tyler, and Katherine—Tyler to distract the hunters and Katherine to get her away. She still remembers the taste of Katherine’s blood on her tongue, healing her well enough to get them moving. She was going to take Elena back to Damon and Stefan and everything would be fine. Everything would be fine.

Then the gunshot. Then waking up here. The realization of what was happening to her dawned on her as she stared down the muzzle of the gun again. She was in transition. She was becoming a vampire.

“I don’t know anything. I told you. Just let me go.”

She wanted to go home. She wanted to see Jeremy one last time and say goodbye. She didn’t want to die like this, alone. She didn’t want to die at all.

She knew there was only one way out.

“Not so fast, ‘Elena.’ We’re not stupid. No human could have survived that gunshot, which means you must be the first doppelganger, Katerina Petrova. You must have switched clothes or something while your hybrid boy was keeping us busy.”

She glanced between the two hunters for a moment. One of them was bleeding badly from her shoulder. She could smell it—had been smelling it since she woke up, and she wanted a taste. She wanted a taste so badly. “So? What do you want from me? Another punching bag? You’ll find that I tend to punch back.”

Never let it be said that she wasn’t good at playing Katherine as well.

The bleeding hunter reached in between the bars to grab her, yanking her forward. As she did, one hand slipped through, pressing against the wound on his shoulder. “Don’t be a smartass, you fanged bitch. You’re going to get what’s coming to you soon enough.”

He then shoved her back into the dirt, and they both turned to walk away. She looked down, at the bright red blood that glistened on the palm of her hand, and she hesitated. Once she did this, there was no going back. She was never going to be the same again.

She tipped her head, staring at the blood for one moment longer, before dipping her head and letting the coppery taste of the blood hit her tongue.

Rebekah was right about one thing—it was euphoric.

She was still starving.

Three people, three full grown men drained dry, but she still wanted more. She didn’t have time for that now, though. She needed to keep her head on straight, and get back to the Salvatore boarding house. Damon and Stefan would have more blood. Damon and Stefan would be able to help her.

The sun would be up soon, and she needed to be inside before it happened.

She stumbled through the streets of Mystic Falls, the blood on her clothes weighing them down as she stumbled, but she could barely feel it. Every cell in her body was thrumming and alive and she just wanted to run out into the night and explore everything.

But she needed to be smart. She needed to get home. She needed to get home, and everything would be okay.

By the time she reached the boarding house, everything was starting to crumble. She was starting to realize what she had done, the fact that she had killed them, and just walked away like it was nothing. Tears were starting to spring to her eyes before she even reached the door and she stopped, resting her forehead against the wood panel of the door before rapping her palm against it gently.

“Stefan?” her voice asked, coming off a bit more broken than she would have liked. “Damon?”
